Day 50 -

Okay, so I was creeping on people again. This little dude is the cousin of my neighbor's best friend's sister (I think -_-). Anyways, he was walking up the stairs with my neighbor when I was going down and he just looked so content! I can't even really explain the look on his face, but for a little kid, he was awesome. No crying, no pouting or temper tantrums..

Anyways, because he was so adorable, I asked ma neighbor if I could take a picture of him so I could paint him for my project. She was like: "As long as I can have it when you're done. His mom will love it!" So, I asked the little guy to 'smile big!' and he gave me the huge smile you see up there.

Sweet kid

Dear breesense,

I hope that my little critique will be of help to you. I read the story behind this sweet piece of art, and liked it. I don't find it creepy that you draw people you meet - I think it's a huge compliment, if someone finds you that inspiring. And I daresay, the mother of that sweetrobin will definitely like it.

What I noticed first, is the huge amount of bright colours in this picture. There seems to be no darkness in it at all, only light. I think that was the artist's intention - the child is happy, so naturally that emotion would be mirrored in the chosen colours. The background is bright blue and quite simple, which I liked. I did not get distracted by too many ornaments.

What I liked best about the picture are the eyes of the little boy. They are symmetrical, jungle green and full of happiness. Looking at them, I just had to feel good. Those eyes give you hope, and that's not an easy thing to do.

The boy also wears a bright, clean-white smile, which is - as the artist stated, too - quite a contrast to what most children seem to be like, today. There is no falseness in that smile, no broken heart, no thoughtfulness - only the pure bliss of a child yet untouched by all the dark things in the world it will know someday. I like that very much in children, generally, and that feeling of being perfectly content with his own life is brought across perfectly, chapeau.

Apart from the eyes and smile and the colours - and the neat, blue background - I like the oil colours. They seem to be used (at first glance) without any real order, but if you look closely, you notice that everything is symmetrical, especially when you look at the face. Also, the eyelashes are just wonderful, they seem to be so very soft indeed.

A point of criticism for me as a viewer would be: especially on the left part of the face, the hair seems to be missing, somehow. There's quite a big part which is rather dark and here I would have liked some more hair. That line down from the left eyebrow is not that pretty, either. It gives the face a hard edge unfitting with the rest (as I see it). In general, the eyebrows are a little too not-existent, a bit more colour here and maybe a little bit less on the left side of the face, and it would be a perfect picture, I think. What I like is also, that the ears are neatly done, especially the left one; ears are not an easy thing to draw. Nicely done, again. The hair is not my favourite part, though, neither is the darkness on the left part.

All in all, I like this piece of art for its brightness, the hope in it (eyes and smile, especially) and the nice symmetry you notice only at second glance. The boy seems very realistic, soft and pure. What I rather dislike is the darkness on the left side of the face (as mentioned), the eyebrows and somehow, that the forehead seems to be too white, whereas the nose seems to be too dark, somehow. But this is probably more realistic than an immaculate, one-colour face, so it's more my personal taste than criticism.

I hope that my critique helped you a little. Keep up your good work, I'll definitely visit your gallery more often!
